THERE was a cold start for the last race of 2010 at Arden Club (Defford).

A strong debate began as to whether to sail or not in the cold, icy and windless conditions.

Eventually, three hardy members took to the water. David Stephen stepped in to take officer of the day duties and set a rather short two-lap race. As the starting horn went, the three boats drifted around the start-line for a while trying to get some clear air.

Niall Campbell, who was sailing his Enterprise single-handed, was able to set off first and was then followed closely by Ralph Evans in the Solo.

As the two made their way up the river, they were neck-and-neck.

By the distance mark, Campbell had just edged in front and was able to hold off Evans to secure the win.

The latter claimed a strong second place. David Bryden (Heron) never really got going and retired after completing one-and-a-half laps.
