IT was a testing race for Lewis Tinsley on Sunday, but he came out of the event 'King of the Bergs' following a brilliant ride in the 10th Junior Men’s CiCLE road race in Melton Mowbray.
Tinsley, former Prince Henry's student in Evesham, had a fantastic ride in the most unique and challenging race on Britain’s road racing calendar.
The 110 km race started in heavy rain, which made this tricky course even more difficult. With a reasonable start out of 128 riders on the grid, the 17-year-old was soon in the front group, which is where he stayed for most of the race.
One of the hardest sections of the course is Somerberg, which is not only off-road, muddy and slippery, it also has a berg (steep hill) in it.
It isn’t just the off-road sectors that are testing but the many bergs along the route, which give riders a springboard for attacks.
Despite the difficult conditions Lewis Tinsley finished 4th behind HUUB-BCC teammate Ahron Dick.
Lewis was out front for most of the race and also won the coveted title of ‘King of the Bergs’ after accumulating the most points during the various climbs throughout the race.
