Jane Foreman, our President, welcomed members on a very cold evening and wished Christina Bacon a happy birthday, the only member to have been born in November. The December meeting is to be a sit-down meal and the competition is for members to decorate a ‘name place’ for themselves. Jane Powell gave an account of the Littletons Group Meeting and said how much she and other members had enjoyed it. Pauline Bamber then gave her account of the evening at Alvechurch and hearing all about the Staffordshire hoard and the 3000 pieces found, none of them having ‘feminine characteristics’. As this talk was over-subscribed, it is hoped that a similar one will be repeated in the County.
Members were reminded to use their voting rights for the 2011 Resolutions. Mention was also made of the Worcestershire weekend at Denman, the Carol Service at Cleeve Prior, and our own Christmas Fayre on the 4th December. The visit to Norton to witness how waste disposal is managed was organised with car drivers and pick-up points.
Dr Gillian White gave us a splendid insight into Elizabethan Textiles and, from a painting of Elizabeth the First, she took us through all the elements contained in the picture from tapestries, carpets, paintings and, of course, the fabrics used for making all the wonderful gowns. Many of the slides she used were taken of items at Hardwick Hall as well as the V and A. She was warmly thanked by Lyndall Bagnall and our competition, in line with the subject, was an embroidered item. There were many entries for this but the winner was Jenny Dainty with Bobbie Marshall and Christine Bailey second and third.
