IN the Queen’s Coronation year, celebrations took place across the Vale welcoming the new monarch to the throne.
Looking back to 1953 an Evesham resident has remembered the momentous occasion.
Tony Willoughby discovered photos of events marking the important date in both Common Road where he was born and the village he now calls home, Bretforton. The images from 60 years ago show local children, many of whom may still live in the area, enjoying the celebrations and rejoicing in the return of sweets to the shop counters.
Mr Willoughby said: “Those are the kids that lived on Common Road. I suspect most of those people are still around and would recognise themselves in the photo. One or two of them are sadly not around anymore. There are one of two people around that will go ‘yippee’ when they see the photo.
“I actually bumped into someone on that photo and got a copy of the photo and she was thrilled to bits.
“It was not a good day weather wise but everyone had a good time, coupled with the fact that sweets were taken off ration only a few days prior.”
