DESPITE household burglary figures remaining comparatively low across south Worcestershire police have advised people to take some simple steps to avoid becoming a victim of crime this Christmas.

West Mercia Police’s Operation Christmas Presence is aimed at reducing the opportunities for any would-be offenders to commit crime over the festive period.

Police suggest presents should not be left on display under Christmas trees if at all possible and homes should be kept secure during dark winter evenings with good locks and lighting.

Chief Insp Sue Thomas is co-ordinating this year’s campaign. She said: “Electronic and other valuable gifts should be property marked and if people are going away for the festive season they should let their neighbours know.

“Timer switches and lights should be used when out celebrating to give the impression that somebody is home and curtains closed to prevent anybody seeing inside. Also use timer switches on lights if going away for a few days.”

West Mercia Police have recommended a few simple precautions that people could take: • Drivers should make sure they don’t leave valuables, including bags of Christmas shopping and sat navs, on display in vehicles and should ensure they park in a safe, well lit spot.

• While out in busy shopping areas make sure purses and handbags are securely fastened and be aware of who is around you. Never leave bags unattended and don’t carry large amounts of cash. Keep your pin number a secret and be alert when using cashpoints.

• Once Christmas is over take any boxes from valuable gifts to your nearest household waste site rather than leaving them outside for roadside bin collection so as not to advertise new purchases to potential thieves.
