PUPILS at an Evesham school are calling on Journal readers to back a caring canine who has truly proven herself to be man’s best friend.
Lexi, a 10-year-old German Shepherd bitch, has been visiting the Vale of Evesham School with her owner Jo Jefford for the past 18 months as part of the Pets As Therapy project.
In that time, Lexi has made such an impression on pupils and staff, they nominated her for the HiLife Pets As Therapy Dog of the Year competition. Judges were so impressed with her work they selected her as one of six finalists and the school is now appealing for Journal readers to get behind Lexi by voting her through to the next round.
Teacher Jean Spencer said Lexi had been vital in helping pupils overcome personal obstacles. “We started having Pets As Therapy come into the school four years ago because we had some youngsters who were very frightened of dogs,” she said.
“We have used them to help youngsters conquer fear of dogs and in therapy which has been really good for their self esteem and confidence.
“We decided to nominate Lexi because she’s so brilliant with the children.
“German Shepherds generally get bad press but she’s a real star in the eyes of the staff and pupils.”
Mrs Jefford, who enrolled Lexi with Pets As Therapy seven years ago, said she was extremely proud of Lexi’s work.
“From a personal point of view, I just find it amazing the way the children respond to her,” she said.
The winner of the competition will be announced at Crufts next March.
