AGE is no barrier to love as Evesham couple Mabel Robb and Jim Davis will prove this weekend.
The 80-year-old widow and 70-year-old widower will marry before family and friends at All Saints’ Church on Saturday. They became friends two years ago when Jim moved into a flat on the same floor as Mabel at Homesmith House retirement development in St Mary’s Road.
Friendship blossomed into love and then, in May this year, the grandfather-of-three decided the time was right to pop the question.
“Our family have been very supportive of us and so have all the people at Homesmith,” said grandmother-of-five Mabel.”
Jim said: “We decided to get married firstly because we fell in love. We’re also of the generation that believes in marriage.”
The couple began their celebrations on Tuesday with a ladies’ supper-cum-hen party for Mabel at Homesmith and a few quiet drinks down the local pub for Jim and his friends.
On the day, the father-of-four will be supported by his best man, John Fallon, while Mabel will be walked down the aisle by eldest grandson Edward.
Afterwards, the wedding party will return to Homesmith for the reception party before the newlyweds depart for a nine-day honeymoon in the Lake District.
Speaking of the big day, the mother-of-two said: “I’m not nervous. We really honestly just hope everybody just comes and has a lovely time with us and goes away as happy as we are.”
Daughter, Carolyn Uden, added: “They’re soul mates really. I’ve never seen mum so happy.”
