THREE Queen’s Scouts were the first in Evesham and district to gain the silver standard for the Duke of Edinburgh Award 50 years ago.

The Journal of 1960 reported: “Three Queen’s Scouts of the 1st Hampton Scout Troop were presented with certificates and silver badges, awarded to those who have attained the silver standard for the Duke of Edinburgh Award, at the Scout Hut, Hampton.

“Peter Williams, aged 16, David Thomas, 17, and Kenneth Crane, 16, the first Scouts in Evesham and district to gain the award, were presented with the certificate and badge by Mr A H Ross, District Commissioner, at the combined meeting of Senior Scouts. The award also carries a special badge for the uniform.

“Mr Ross congratulated the Scouts on their achievement and expressed the hope that they would go for the gold awards.

“The same Scouts were presented with the Senior Explorer badges by Mr Chaloner, of the Worcester Sea Scouts. Next month a former Hampton Scout, Robert Dyer, who is now serving with the RAF, will receive his gold award at Buckingham Palace. He is a member of a Scout troop in South Wales.

“Following the presentations, there was a sing-song round the piano under the direction of Mrs Selby, of Hinton-on-the-Green. Hot dogs were served by three Hampton Junior Scouts, Alan Webb, Roger Thould and Peter Spires with Mrs A Checketts.”
