A MUSICAL project which provides a huge boost for young musicians is appealing for sponsorship to enable it to continue.

Charlton Church Chamber Concerts were set up in the village about two years ago by Charlotte Ooi of Charlton Stores and other local people with the aim of raising money to restore the church.

Mrs Ooi said: "We have managed to stage 12 very successful concerts since that time, but perhaps our priorities have changed in the process.

"It was initially hoped that the concerts would raise money for church restoration. This has worked only to a limited extent. Fortunately, the concerts have done well to raise awareness of our plight and the church is currently undergoing essential repairs, although more money will have to be found in the years to come."

Instead, the concerts have become a popular feature and a focus for many locals as well as music lovers from further afield.

"It is our aim to provide first class concerts to local families, elderly people and children, who might not otherwise be able, or inclined, to attend concerts of this nature. The project is designed to keep music alive in this rural district," she said adding: "We do believe that our project is unique in this area. We have been most fortunate in attracting superb musicians, mostly young professionals."

But she says the work will be unable to continue unless sponsorship is found and letters have gone out to local businesses asking for support. For example, the majority of the concerts involve a piano which costs £340 to hire. The next two concerts on February 10 and May 5 require a piano.
