ALTHOUGH they were pipped at the post by Parklangley Tennis Club in the ballot for the title National Club of the Year, Shipston-on-Stour Lawn Tennis Club have been crowned Warwickshire Club of the Year for the year 2000.
In the competition, sponsored by the Bank of Ireland, Shipston was selected by the Warwickshire committee as the club that has done most in the county to promote the sport to the whole community.
They formed a tennis partnership with the Stour Valley Community School and the Stratford District Council in 1998.
Last September, three new floodlit tennis dedicated courts were opened at the school which have enabled the already extensive programme of courses to further expand.
They are working hard to remove all the barriers which have in the past been associated with tennis - bringing the joys of the game to the young, old, able-bodied, disabled, beginners, social players and the accomplished campaigners.
The courses allow players to learn and develop their game in a fun and affordable way and the club gives the opportunities for competition and social play.
The work and enthusiasm of the partnership has attracted sponsorship from the Halifax, Tesco and Bryant Homes.
Tennis is no longer a summer sport - courses run throughout the year - and players can join them at any time.
