A CONVENIENCE store could be built on the site of a former builders’ merchants in Evesham.

Plans have been put forward to redevelop the former Graham Builders premises in Elm Road.

The proposals, which have been submitted to Wychavon District Council, make no mention of which retailer is likely to take over the site but say the store would have 258sqm of retail floor space.

The plan is to convert the former showroom at the front of the site into a convenience store, while a warehouse at the back of the site would be demolished.

Twenty car parking spaces would be provided including three disabled, two parent and child, and four electric vehicle charging spaces.

According to the plans, around 15 full-time jobs would be created plus an additional 10 part-time positions.

The proposed opening hours for the shop are 7am to 11pm, seven days a week.

“The proposal will reduce the scale of the built form on the site with the demolition of the large building to the rear,” the plans state.

“It replicates a similar layout to the existing front store of the site including the refurbishment of the existing building, therefore the proposal is not considered to impact upon neighbouring amenity.

“The refurbishment of the existing building will improve the visual impact of the site on the street scene. The refurbishment also has sustainable benefits alongside the reuse of a brownfield previously developed site.

“The proposal will strengthen the retail mix in the area, increase food store provision and help meet the retail needs of the resident local catchment area by enhancing consumer choice.”

Gillian Pawson, of Vale of Evesham Civic Society, said the proposed store is only 320 metres from Lidl and is also close to the Co-op in Davies Road.

“This existing provision should be taken into consideration when looking at the acceptability of the proposal,” she said.

Cllr Emma Stokes said: “There appear to be valid traffic and residential concerns which need to be addressed.

“Given the high level of public interest this may require determination at planning committee.”
