THERE was not a spot left to stand in a town park during its bonfire and fireworks event.

Evesham Bonfire and Fireworks went off without a hitch and drew record crowds according to councillors.

With numbers potentially entering the thousands, the event, which is run by Evesham Town Council, has raised thousands for charities in the town.

The event was "Evesham at its best", according to those who went.

Deputy mayor of Evesham Town Council, Councillor John Clatworthy, said: "It was absolutely excellent. It was more than hundreds it was in the thousands.

"It was exceptionally good and phenomenal. We had no incident and no problems, it ran like clockwork.

"The colours on the trees once the bonfire had been lit were absolutely amazing.

"I haven't heard a single complaint. Even the traffic was flowing great. Three cars in one direction, stop, three cars in the other direction, stop.

"All the credit has to be given to Jo and the team at the town council because they've done a great job.

"I think people really appreciated that it was on the actual day even though it was a Tuesday and not the Saturday before or after."

The bonfire was lit by Evesham's mayor, Cllr Robert Raphael.

Evesham Bonfire and Fireworks raised money for the mayors charities which are Wallace House Community Centre, Ourside Youth Centre and Evesham Adventure Playground.

Evesham Town Council Cllr Marion Griffiths said: "It was a big team effort and it had all the key components of a successful public event.

"There was a fantastic group playing, Flat Tonic, the fireworks were amazing and the James Bond theme proved popular on the night.

"At one point I was stood near the stage and looked out towards the bonfire.

"There wasn't a place to stand in front, I looked to the left, it was the same, I looked to the right and there was still no space.

"The whole area was filled with people of all ages having a great time.

"I wasn't stood there counting everyone who came in but I think we could have had record crowds.

"It was a pleasure to witness Evesham at its best."
