AN event that would have illuminated a historic Worcestershire estate was cancelled for an "unexpected" reason.

English Heritage was going to open Witley Court and Gardens after hours for five evenings for illuminations and tales.

However, English Heritage has confirmed the event has been cancelled after revealing it has closed the estate to all visitors.

Those attending the event between October 26 and 31 were going to experience immersive displays inspired by the Brothers Grimm's fairy tales.

But, unexpected maintenance works have now cancelled the event entirely.

A spokesperson for English Heritage said: "We’re very sorry to let you know that we have to cancel Illuminated Witley Court due to unexpected maintenance works.

"Tickets will be automatically refunded within ten working days."

Witley Court has also been closed to visitors due to maintenance.

No date has been given as to when it may reopen.

Illuminated Witley Court would completely transform the estate using light, colour, and sound displays.

Visitors were going to explore the grand ruins of the former stately home and its gardens, inhabited by characters from the famous tales.

When the event was published, Ella Harrison, who is the events manager at English Heritage, said: "Illuminated Witley Court is a unique Halloween experience that all ages can enjoy inspired by the famous tales of the Brothers Grimm.

"We’ve really enjoyed making this beautiful place even more spectacular by our illuminations and storytellers.

"Don’t forget to wrap up warm and be ready to capture some amazing photos of your visit."

Guests who have bought a ticket are expected to get a full refund in ten working days.

A hundred years ago, Witley Court was one of England's great country houses and would be home to many large parties at the time.

But in 1937 disaster struck, when a large fire ripped through the Italianate building.

The estate is now a place for families to enjoy a day out, exploring the dramatic ruins, beautiful gardens, and wild woodlands.
