The deadline is nearing for Worcestershire youngsters to take part in the Summer Reading Challenge.

Worcestershire County Council’s Library Service has issued the final call, urging keen readers to not miss out on the country's biggest literacy event for children.

Taking place over the school holidays, the challenge was launched to engage children into maintaining their reading skills over the summer holidays.

This year's theme, Marvellous Makers, has inspired an array of activities at libraries, be it junk modelling, painting, or music and dance, as children made their way through their six books.

Councillor Karen May said: "The Summer Reading Challenge has been a wonderful experience for so many children throughout the county.

"The deadline for completing six books is approaching quickly, and I urge all readers to keep going.

"I’d like to thank our brilliant staff and volunteers who talked to the children about their books and organised many fun activities this summer.”

Children have until Saturday (September 14) to visit their nearest library and register the six books they have read with the library staff to officially complete the challenge.

The successful completion will not just see them receive a certificate, but they will also be honoured at an award ceremony with a medal.
