A MEDIEVAL horse pendant that could have been used in The Battle of Evesham has been donated to a trust with hopes that it could one day hang in the town once again.

The artefact which dates back to the same time period as the battle was donated to the Battlefield Trust during the Battle of Evesham Festival on August 3.

Peter Stewart who has been metal detecting for over 50 years found the pendant in 2011 around Badsey.

Mr Stewart said: "I found it with my metal detector around Badsey many years ago, but I've also found loads of other stuff including four Celtic coins which was declared a treasure trove and is now in The Almonry.

"I've been metal detecting since the 1970s but had to pack it in a few years ago.

"I think it was exactly the right time to part with the pendant as it could have been use in the Battle of Evesham.

"It has no monetary value to me and it's been hanging on my wall for ages, but it's important for the town and has historic value."

The artifact measures 38x30mm and is made from a copper-alloy.

Mick Hurst, a member of the Battlefield Trust and director of The Battle of Evesham was given custody of the pendant and has big plans for its future.

Mr Hurst said: "The idea is to display the pendant if and when we get a visitor centre built.

"We are still waiting for funds but councillors and landowners are behind us and we are hoping to move onto the next stage in the next few months.

"I was taken aback and humbled to be made the custodian of the pendant.

"I am honoured because it must have been so personal to him.

"It dates back to the right period for the Battle of Evesham but we cant guarantee that it was used, but it's exciting because it could have been.

"It was not found at the actual site of the battle, instead it was found around Badsey.

"It could have come from someone fleeing the battle or from another rider later in the century."
