TWO parks in Evesham have received a highly coveted award.

Abbey Park and Workman Gardens have both retained their internationally recognised Green Flag Awards.

The awards recognise well managed parks and green spaces across the world.

Mark Goodge, Evesham Town Council councillor, said: "I think this is a very good thing.

"They have both been awarded for a while and it's down to the parks team that they have been renewed.

"They are both a credit to Evesham and the district and I enjoy my time in them and I hope everyone else does too.

"It's key to tribute the parks team who do an amazing job and it looks like all their work has paid off."

Abbey Park received its first Green Flag award in 2005 and Workman Gardens has kept its award since 2007.

Councillor Karen May, Worcestershire County Council’s cabinet member with responsibility for communities said: “They are a huge part of what makes our county so special for residents and visitors, providing opportunities to explore our fantastic green spaces and to lead healthy outdoor lifestyles.

"I am so proud of the team and our incredible volunteers and would like to congratulate them on this huge achievement.

"They are the real success story behind the awards as they work so hard to look after the wonderful countryside in Worcestershire.

"Our green spaces would not be the same without them and I would like to thank them for everything they do.”

The Green Flag Award scheme is managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy.

Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Award Scheme manager, Paul Todd MBE, said: “I would like to congratulate everyone involved in Worcestershire on achieving a Green Flag Award.

“These sites are vital green spaces for communities in the county to socialise, enjoy nature, for children to play safely and it provides important opportunities for park users to improve their physical and mental health.

"We know that staff and volunteers work tirelessly to ensure that it maintains the high standards of the Green Flag Award, everyone involved should feel extremely proud of their achievement.

"It is important that our free to use spaces are maintained to the Green Flag Award standard, making them accessible for all members of the community while ensuring the environment is protected.”
