A POPULAR bank has announced that it is closing its branch in Evesham later this year.

Halifax will be closing its doors on its Evesham branch on November 5.

A Halifax spokesperson said: "As many customers now choose to bank through their mobile app or online, visits to our Evesham branch have fallen over recent years.

"The local Post Office offers everyday banking, with cash also available at close by free-to-use ATMs.

"Customers can also manage their money through our mobile banking apps, online, by calling us or speaking to a Community Banker."

The spokesperson acknowledged that footfall at the branch had fallen 59% since 2019 and that was a major part of the decision.

Mary Tasker, Evesham North councillor at Wychavon District Council, said: "It is a real shame for the town.

"Lloyds has closed as well and the town will really miss them.

"It is understandable after covid with lots more people moving to online banking.

"We do have a large older population in Evesham and I do think that the older generation will miss physically going into the branch.

"They are much more used to dealing in cash rather than cards."

The Nearby Post Office, at 87 High Street will offer personal and business customers everyday banking services, access to cash and paying in cheques.

According to the Halifax spokesperson, there are six free-to-use ATMs within a quarter of a mile from the branch.

Alan Booth, Evesham Town Council councillor, said: "It's a great loss and another loss for the high street.

"I don't know what their customers will do, it's unbelievable.

"Luckily we have two other banks in town but I suppose a lot of people do their banking online.

"But a lot of people don't trust online and I feel sorry for them, but unfortunately there's nothing you can do.

"No one wants the bank to close, it's a bit of a disaster, now one person at the post office is going to be doing everything."

The Halifax spokesperson confirmed that staff would be on hand to offer support until the closure of the branch and also confirmed that after the bank closes, a 'community banker' would be visiting the area.
