PLANS have been submitted for the addition of two electric charging stations to the car park of an Evesham pub, but do we have enough in the town?

The Strawberry Field in Charity Crescent hopes to install the charging points to offer electric charging for customers.

The plans propose the "Installation of two electric vehicle charging stations, including the erection of associated equipment (feeder pillar) and installation of associated underground cabling and signage."

According to Zapmap, a website that pinpoints where public charging stations can be found, Evesham has a total of nine charging points.

Julie Tucker, Wychavon District Council councillor for Evesham South, said: "We definitely need more public charging points, I'm personally not aware of any.

"The ones in Waitrose have gone and as far as I'm aware there aren't any in Wychavon council car parks, but I may be wrong.

"Having more should be encouraged, if there are no public charging stations in town, it puts visitors and the local community off coming into Evesham.

"The more there are the better off the town is, more people will probably visit.

"We have a lot of wonderful events and it's a shame if people don't visit because of a lack of available public charging stations.

"It's something that's brought up quite a lot and I've had quite a few people come up to me and ask where they are."

Six out of the nine current stations offer 'rapid' charging offering speed higher than 25kW.

The remaining three are classed as 'fast' offering speeds of between 7kW and 22kW.

Jo Adams, clerk for Evesham Town Council said: "Evesham Town Council recommends approval for this application.

"As an additional comment, the council would like to see a percentage of charging points made wider for easier use by disabled people.

"It is not suggested that these should be exclusive use for disabled people but that accessible charging points need to be supplied."

According to Zapmap, the current stations are at Evesham Retail Park, Evesham Leisure Centre, PJ Nicholls LTD, The Northwick Arms Hotel, Lidl, Morrisons, Sinclair Retail Park, Four Pools Retail Park and Basepoint.

A spokesperson for The Strawberry Field said: “We've recently submitted a planning application to install two electric charging points at The Strawberry Field, in Evesham, to offer car charging spaces for our guests.

"We are waiting for a decision on the application before we can start to plan anything further."

Consultation for the plans end on July 1.
