A POPULAR former mayor who recently lost his position has endorsed a candidate for the Droitwich and Evesham constituency in the upcoming general election.
Andy Street the former West Midlands Mayor has announced his support for Nigel Huddleston to become the MP for the area.
Mr Street the former Conservative mayor, said: "I got to know Nigel very well when we were working together on delivering the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, of course a huge success – probably the best Games ever – just two years ago. And what I saw in Nigel was something rare in a politician, an ability to get things done.
“He was the Sports Minister overseeing it all, worked with us all on the ground and brought people together, a really brilliant leader. So that’s the calibre of the man you’ve got as your parliamentary candidate."
The former mayor lost his position last month.
A recount was necessary because the result was so close.
Mr Street continued: "I very recently lost my position as mayor because 33,000 people voted Reform. I lost by just 1,500 votes and we ended up with a Labour Mayor.
So if you do not want a Labour Member of Parliament in Droitwich and Evesham it’s very simple, you have to get out and vote for Nigel.
Don’t leave it to someone else, don’t take it for granted, and please don’t wake up on the July 5 regretting what’s happened.”
Voting for the general election will take place on July 4, and the candidates for Droitwich and Evesham are Sam Bastow (Reform UK), Andrew Flaxman, (Social Democratic Party), Neil Franks (Green Party), Nigel Huddleston (Conservative), Chipiliro Kalebe-Nyamongo (Labour) and Oliver Walker (Liberal Democrats).
Nigel Huddleston said: "I am delighted to have the backing of Andy Street, someone who I have worked closely with in the past and who had a brilliant track record as mayor.
"The West Midlands is worse off without Andy as mayor, and his recent election defeat is a clear example of ‘Vote Reform, Get Labour’."
