A FLAG will fly half-mast next month to pay tribute to a man described as a 'world-class ambassador' for Evesham.
Worcestershire county councillor and Evesham Town Councillor Peter Griffiths died unexpectedly earlier this month.
On the day of Mr Griffiths' funeral (February 8), the flag outside The Almonry Museum will fly at half mast in memory of the well-loved councillor.
Mr Griffiths has been described as a "champion" for the town who, throughout the years, has directed funding for three additional defibrillators, placed benches in the high street and helped allow cafes and eateries to be established in Evesham.
Mr Griffiths' wife, Marion, said: "It is a fitting tribute shown to someone who not only died in office as a County and Evesham Town Councillor but to someone who also contributed a great deal throughout the constituency of Mid Worcestershire.
"As a member of Worcestershire County Council, Peter considered it an honour and a privilege to serve on many committees, whereby his contribution to them would leave a lasting impact.
"Peter was always a passionate advocate for Evesham and found many exciting ways to enhance it.
"Alongside colleagues, he worked tirelessly to obtain permission for restaurants and cafes to have outside dining to boost tourism in the town.
"Whenever it was possible, Peter took the opportunity to support charitable and cultural causes in Evesham."
Mr Griffiths was first elected to represent the Evesham North West Division on the county council in May 2021 and has since served across several committees.
He worked across the Audit and Governance Committee, Corporate and Communities Overview and Scrutiny Panel, Environment Overview and Scrutiny Panel, Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee and the Planning and Regulatory Committee.
He is survived by his wife, Marion, two children, and three grandchildren.
Councillor Robert Raphael, chairman of Wychavon District Council and Evesham town councillor, said: "Peter was an excellent town and county councillor, world-class ambassador for Evesham and first-rate friend.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time.
"He will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him."
No public information has been released on the details of Mr Griffiths funeral.
