A PLAN to build a new 3G football pitch at a town school has been submitted.
Prince Henry’s High School has submitted proposals to build the new floodlit 3G pitch on its playing fields at the site off Victoria Road in Evesham.
The new pitch would be used by the school but would also be available for hire to junior and youth teams and other community organisations.
Nine football clubs already use the existing facilities at Prince Henry’s and the school has been working with Wychavon District Council – which agreed to pay £300,000 towards the project last year - for several years to build a new 3G pitch.
The new pitch would open from 8am to 10pm on weekdays and 8am and 6pm at weekends.
Wychavon District Council agreed to put forward up to £300,000 to help build the new pitch in 2022.
The project, which is expected to cost around £600,000, would be funded partly by the council’s contribution and £300,000 from the Football Foundation - the charity responsible for channelling government, FA and Premier League money into grassroots football.
A statement included with the application said: “The FA have identified a need within the local area for a 3G pitch and as part of the FA framework are prepared to fund the introduction of an appropriate facility at Prince Henry’s High School.
“An artificial grass pitch will provide a good quality football facility that removes weather as a factor and ensures sports fixtures, curriculum activities and general training are not cancelled due to adverse weather or ground conditions.
“The introduction of this new proposal will expand and improve the facilities available at the school and within the wider community, thus encouraging a wider range of participants.
“The FA are actively promoting women’s football with an aim to dramatically increasing the levels of female participation in the sport and it is therefore envisaged that this new facility will assist in achieving this aim.
“The new facility would be located on the existing grass playing field. It has however been positioned in such a way that the existing two grass rugby pitches and football pitch to the north can be retained and the cricket wicket and the athletics track relocated.”
