Here are the top 10 most common surnames in Worcestershire- and how many people have them:

As this is the most common surname in England, it’s unsurprising that it also took Worcestershire’s number one spot too.
According to the Forebears website, Smith is an occupational surname it comes from the word for someone who works with metal, such as a blacksmith.

2. Jones- 7277
This is it the second most common name in England.
It’s also the 208th most common in the world and a high percentage of people in Wales also bear the name.
Jones is a patronymic surname, meaning the son of John, or Johan or Jone.
3. Taylor- 4409
This surname is derived from the occupation of a 'tailor' or 'cutter of cloth'.
It's the third most common in England and 345th most common surname in the world.
4. Williams- 4403
This is derived from the forename William and has early origins in medieval England.
However, the primary source of the name is from Wales.
It is most prevalent in the United Stated and a high percentage people people share the surname in Turks and Caicos Islands.
5. Davies- 3370
This name means ‘son of Davie’ and is most common in England and Wales.
Approximately 500,664 people across the world bear this name and it’s the 1,067th most common in the world.
6. Evans- 3097
Derived from an ancestor, this name means ‘the son of Evan’ and is thought to have Welsh origins.
It’s the 13th most popular in England and 655th most common in the world.
7. Harris- 2881
Once again, this name is derived from an ancestor and means ‘the son of Harry’- this being the English attempt at pronouncing the French Henri.
The name Harrison also derives from this name.
It’s the 482nd most common in the world and more than 1, 091, 757 people in the world bear this surname.
8. Hill- 2523
This is the 28th most popular surname in England.
It’s actually derived from a geographical locality ‘at the hill’.
As every village required a ‘Smith’ so too does every district and village need a ‘hill’ as almost all of them had a its rising ground called ‘the hill’.
9. Roberts- 2464
Approximately 853,000 people in the world bear this surname and it is most prevalent in the USA.
It’s derived from an ancestor of ‘son of Robert’.
According to the Forbears website, the influence of this name was enormous.
Its chief nicks, were Hob and Dob with Hobkin, Hopkin and Dobinson also derived from it; but the most famous diminutive was Robin.
10. Brown- 2413
This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor- 'the son of Brun' (i.e. Brown).
It is the fourth most popular name in England and 206th most popular in the world.
