BURGLARS in balaclavas have been branded 'amateurish' after a string of terrifying break-ins in Evesham as police chased and caught a suspect.

The raids have been carried out by two males wearing balaclavas in Evesham in the early hours of Sunday and Monday. However, it is now understood a 25-year-old male from Childswickham has been arrested for burglary after a 'lengthy foot chase' in Evesham on Tuesday (May 23).

DI Dave Knight of Proactive CID, speaking before the arrest, said intelligence indicated at least two males have been involved in the break-ins in Lime Street, Knowle Hill, Falkland Road and Maple Close in the early hours of Sunday.

Another burglary followed in the early hours of Monday in Croft Road when a back window was forced open.

He said the suspects appeared to be focusing on stealing car keys from inside but had so far has slim pickings, describing their methods as 'unprofessional'.

During the burglaries the suspects have been jemmying open windows. All six houses were said to be occupied at the time of the burglaries which is considered an aggravating feature if cases reach court.

On Monday the suspects gained entry to an insecure property in Croft Road and stole a 17-year-old Mercedes E-class estate. "It will only be a matter of time before we arrest them. It's amateurish. It indicates they might be individuals who may have some form of debt, possibly a drugs debt. Despite their amateurish efforts, these individuals do cause an awful lot of harm.

"The way these individuals are carrying on it is only a matter of time before they get detained by the homeowner or by police."

He asked anyone in Evesham who knew who these people are to contact West Mercia Police or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

DI Knight also urged people to note down the registration number of any suspicious vehicles.  Two officers successfully intercepted and arrested a man for burglary at the Co-op in Honeybourne, near Evesham earlier this month.

"He was tackled to the ground by uniformed local officers," said DI Knight. The suspect was arrested a little before 1am on Friday, May 19.

The advice is for the public to call 999 if they suspect a burglary may be in progress.
