Broad Street in Pershore could become town square

Pershore Town Council has put in two bids for funds from Wychavon District Council’s Community Legacy Grant, aimed at fulfilling priorities of the adopted Town Plan.

One of the grants would be used to make enhancements to Broad Street, which would see it effectively transformed into a town square.

Due to it being a busy road for traffic and public transport, such a project would require major changes to the area.

The Town Plan lists several measures which would need to happen in order to transform Broad Street into a town square.

Car parking, bus stops, and street furniture would all have to be relocated.

Furthermore, the Royal Arcade side of the square would have to be reduced to a single carriageway and traffic signals would need to be introduced at the junction with High Street.

The project would also likely require planning permission.

The document outlining the Town Council’s legacy grant bid states: “Pershore is considered by those who live and work here to be an independent spirited town with events at its heart and it is suggested that bringing the town’s varied and vibrant events programme into a revitalized Broad Street would reinforce its bustling independent retail and food and drink offer.

“The scheme has the support of both Wychavon District Council and Worcestershire County Council who would have to carry out the works.”

Pershore Town Council is now asking residents to share their thoughts about the project.

Residents can visit the Town Hall or Library to pick up a consultation document or download it here.

Responses must be sent back to the Town Hall before Friday, May 20.

There will also be a face to face consultation outside the Town Hall on Saturday, May 14, from 10am to 12pm.

Members of the Town Council will be available to answer any questions regarding the proposals.
