FREQUENT flooding on a main road into Evesham will become a thing of the past following planned waterworks.

Pipes at risk of bursting are to be replaced on Pershore Road with work set to begin next week.

Severn Trent Water will spend £115,000 on the scheme, which is due to take around three months to complete.

A letter distributed to residents by the water company read: “The water pipes in the area have served your community well for many years, but have recently been showing their age, resulting in a number of bursts.

“When this happens, we have to carry out emergency repairs (and we all know how inconvenient that can be) and your drinking water supplies may be affected.

“In order to ensure supplies are secure in the future we’re going to renew some of those pipes.

“This means that there’ll be some short-term inconvenience — but the advantage of having this work take place will be worth it and secure the network for the future."

Work will begin on Pershore Road on Monday, April 25, moving on to School Road and Meadow End, before finishing at the Alexandra Road junction.

Councillor Robert Raphael raised the issue of frequent flooding on Pershore Road at a recent town council meeting and is delighted to see action taken so swiftly.

He said: “Of course the issue of roadworks in Pershore Road will be a nuisance for the whole town for a while, but the long-term effect will be to resolve the flooding issues for homes and businesses in Hampton, which is great news.”

In total, the work will take around 15 weeks and is likely to cause disruption for motorists.

The Pershore Road and Alexandra Road portions of the development will see temporary traffic lights introduced.

Meanwhile, the School Road and Meadow End portion, which will last eight weeks from May 16, will see road closures introduced.

However, Severn Trent has confirmed that access to homes and businesses will be maintained throughout the project.

Furthermore, residents should be notified of any disruption to water supplies 48 hours beforehand.
