Over 15 tonnes of donations for Ukraine have been collected in Evesham.
The Evesham branch of Teams4u, an international children’s charity, has launched an appeal for aid to support those swept up in the conflict.
The charity’s warehouse, in Davies Road, has so far been filled with around 15 tonnes of supplies with the first lorry expected to leave for Romania next week.
Trustee Paul Jeanes said: “The response has been overwhelming and shows that although we cannot do anything to affect the political or military situation, we can make a difference to some of those affected.
“Donations have come in from surrounding schools, churches, businesses, and individuals.
“For me personally, and my wife Alison, we have been involved in the Teams4u Christmas Shoebox appeal for over 20 years and have travelled extensively to eastern Europe, including Ukraine.
“The reason we got involved and especially in this current crisis is to bring a bit of joy and happiness into the lives of those people we see on the TV each evening in the news who through no fault of their own have fled the country or become displaced.”
The aid will be taken to Suceava, in northern Romania by the Ukraine border.
The University of Suceava has been turned into a refugee camp for Ukrainians fleeing across the border and has direct links with the University of Kyiv.
Donations will be distributed in the city and surrounding areas, while some will be collected from partners to be taken into Ukraine.
Teams4u have spoken with partners in Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine to put together a list of aid needed at this time, full details of which can be found at the bottom of this article.
There are three collection points in Evesham; Morrisons on Davies Road, BHGS in Vale Park, and Cally’s Lounge on Cheltenham Road.
The Davies Road warehouse is open on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 10am to 2pm and 7pm to 9pm on Wednesday.
Smaller Teams4u warehouses around the UK are expected to feed into Evesham, with the appeal currently planned to continue until the end of April.
