Thousands of pounds has been set aside to help towns in Wychavon celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Wychavon District Council has announced that town and parish councils will be given cash grants to fund the celebrations.

In total, £15,000 has been doled out, distributed according to the number of households eligible to pay Council Tax in each area.

Councillor Rob Adams, executive board member for stronger communities, culture and sport, said: “The Queen has given 70 years of dedicated service to her country and we want to make it as easy as possible for people to come together and celebrate this momentous occasion.”

As well as the cash grants, Wychavon announced it will be scrapping road closure fees for groups holding street parties, which would usually cost £95 per street.

At the Evesham Town Council meeting on Monday, March 14, the town clerk, Francesca Pridding announced that the council would receive £2,656 from Wychavon.

She said: “National lottery fund has been applied for in relation to the jubilee, they have a specific fund and its looking like we might need an awful lot of bunting.

“I’m not sure how far our current budget will stretch but it will help.

“Wychavon have announced that they will be awarding us £2,656 to help towards that as well which will give us a nice, healthy, budget and hopefully we can make the town look quite spectacular.”

Towns and parish councils are able to spend the money on supporting their own event or to support community events in the area.

They can also combine grants with neighbouring parishes to fund larger events.

The celebration of the Queen’s 70th year on the throne takes place from Thursday June 2 to Sunday June 5.
