A Worcestershire MP has deleted a tweet that showed a picture of him and other MPs outside 10 Downing Street after saying he's been targeted by Twitter trolls.
Nigel Huddleston, MP for Mid Worcestershire, said that the photo was taken in November 2021 but, in light of Partygate, internet trolls had wrongly believed the photo was from the year before and accused him of breaking lockdown restrictions.
Following a surge of impressions and the trolling of himself and other MPs, Mr Huddleston decided to remove the tweet last night (Wednesday, January 2), two months after posting it.
He said: “It became clear to me yesterday that there was a deliberate attempt to spread misinformation online about a tweet I posted in November 2021 which led to considerable trolling of me and other MPs.
“Unfortunately, the Twitter trolls wanted to spread that the photo in the tweet was from November 2020 (when restrictions were in place) versus November 2021 when there weren't - despite this being clear on the original post.”
He added: “I don't feed trolls, so took the Twitter post down rather than enable further deliberate spreading of misinformation.”
The photo can still be seen on his Instagram with comments limited.
The tweet in question read: “Pleased to spend time this evening with @BorisJohnson and members of the 2015 and 2017 Conservative intakes at @10DowningStreet @lucyallan @david_duguid @EddieHughes4WN @vickyford #VictoriaAtkins.”
