A petition to increase safety on the A46 has seen a surge in signatures following a pair of serious crashes yesterday.
A man in his 50s was killed following a two-vehicle crash at the junction with Cheltenham Road and Aston Summerville while just an hour earlier a woman had to be cut out of her car by fire crews.
In the 24 hours since, over 1,500 people have signed a petition asking for more to be done to increase safety on the road.
The petition was set up earlier this year by Lucy Fletcher after a friend of hers was killed following a collision with a road sweeper.
She said: “Lately it has just been ridiculous, something needs to be done without a doubt.
“It is not just one life that has been destroyed. It is the lives of friends, families and the other driver involved, too.”
Ms Fletcher was involved in a crash on the A46 herself six years ago with her six-month-old daughter also in the car.
When turning right into the Truckstop near Evesham a skip lorry careered into the back of her car.
She says herself and family members have begged Highways England to take action but to no avail.
She added: “My mum emailed the Highways team and was told there weren’t enough deaths on that road.
“Essentially, another eight people have to die before they will do anything about it.
“It wouldn’t cost a fortune. Maybe a couple of thousand for a speed camera, but think of the lives it could benefit.
“The fact that they are doing nothing about it is quite aggravating.”
At the time of writing, the petition has 3,880 signatures with more coming in every minute.
One person who signed, Carol Wade, wrote: “This road is very obviously dangerous and deadly. Something must be done with haste, so no more lives are lost, no more families impacted.”
Another, Sheila Joynes, wrote: “This road has proved itself to be dangerous over and over again.
“I stopped using it as my route to work many years ago because I was terrified crossing at the Broadway Road.
Highways England have been contacted for a response.
