A CAMPAIGNER from Eckington has met with MPs from across the country to speak about the importance of equitable access to education around the world.
22-year-old university student Laura Webb has been a youth ambassador for The ONE Campaign, a non-partisan anti-poverty organisation, since 2019.
Laura is working with The ONE Campaign lobbying for a ‘significant financial commitment from the UK’ to ensure quality education in low-income countries.
Laura said: “I was inspired to join The ONE Campaign after spending 12 months volunteering in Swaziland. I saw first hand the inequality and poverty which some people face, and felt particularly privileged comparing my education in the UK to the schools and resources with the Swazi children, and this issue is of increasing importance since the Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting school closures across the world.
“The ONE Campaign encouraged me to speak to parliamentarians to ultimately make a difference.”
In an online event earlier this month, Laura spoke to MPs including West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin, Caroline Lucas and Lloyd Russel Moyle explaining why the UK ‘must lead by example and make a strong commitment.’
Speaking about the event, Laura said “It was amazing to gain the support from so many MPs and activists.
Laura, who is in her final year at the University of Sussex, studying International Development, said: “I’m excited to see what can be achieved over the coming months.”
