A WORCESTERSHIRE substance misuse service has launched the ‘Lower My Drinking’ app to help support residents to understand and manage their drinking.
The county charity Cranstoun has launched the free app which provides tailored support to people who want to drink less.
The ‘Lower My Drinking’ website allows Worcester residents to self-assess their drinking in confidence, learn about the potential health consequences and receive tailored support to help reduce drinking to lower risk levels.
Those who are directed to the app can track their alcohol consumption and use techniques based on cognitive-behavioural therapy and mindfulness to manage their drinking.
Residents who require professional help are signposted to local alcohol support services.

Annie Steele, director of operations, said: “We are delighted to offer Worcester residents an easy way to assess and reduce their drinking. The Lower My Drinking app supports people with their goals to get healthier, feel better and live healthy, safe and happy lives”.
The launch follows Public Health England figures showing that the number of people drinking at higher risk has soared with estimates from the Office of National Statistics showing a near doubling of higher risk drinkers during lockdown.
Dr Jonathan Ward, managing director of breaking free group, said: “We are excited that ‘Lower My Drinking’ has been made available to all residents of Worcestershire to help prevent alcohol harm. Given the restrictions imposed in response to the coronavirus pandemic, it is now more important than ever to harness digital technology to increase people’s access to effective support to help them address their problem drinking.”
The app is provided by Breaking Free Group, an evidence-based digital treatment and recovery programme that empowers people to overcome problem drinking, drug misuse and smoking.
Cranstoun offers a wide range of services, including substance misuse services, housing support, specialist services for young people and families and carers, domestic abuse services and criminal justice provision. The charity operates the adult alcohol and drug recovery service across Worcestershire, with a separate service for young people and their families. It operates a central hub in Castle Street, Worcester and delivers interventions across all six districts through a shared care scheme and community outreach locations.
