VJ Day 75th anniversary was marked in Evesham and Pershore with special events at the weekend.

A two-minute silence was held outside of the Almonry Museum, Evesham on Saturday to mark the 75th anniversary of the day Japan surrendered that brought the Second World War to an end after six years of fighting.

The newly elected chairman of Wychavon District Council, Robert Raphael, mayor of Evesham Councillor Sue Amor, and councillors John Smith, Francis Smith, Jenny Johnson, Marlene Sale, were among the veterans from the armed forces who attended.

Three standard bearers from the Royal British Legion and the Royal Air Force Association also attended, marshalled by Roy Bates, vice chairman of the Evesham Branch of the Royal British Legion.

The service was led by Councillor Alan Booth, chairman of the Evesham branch of the Royal British Legion, and conducted by the Andy Green, chaplain to the British Legion. Wreaths from the Evesham Royal British Legion branch were laid by Roy Bates and Phillip Speed.

Evesham's Town Crier, John Raphael performed Cry For Peace provided by the Royal British Legion especially for the occasion.

The last post and reveille was played on trumpet by Sue Sollis BEM.

Meanwhile, the 75th anniversary was marked in Pershore with an online community event led by Reverend Steve Dunton.

And there was an outdoor tribute display in front of St Andrew’s Parish Centre with a display of commemorative Pershore rocks.

The large VJ painted stones were distributed to families of Second World War veterans afterwards, while 24 smaller ones were hidden around Abbey Park for children to find and keep.
