A SILENT tribute has been paid to a former Wychavon councillor and passionate campaigner for flood defences for Broadway.
Councillors held a minute’s silence for David Folkes MBE at a virtual council meeting held on Thursday, (April 30), following his death on April 27 at the age of 85.
Mr Folkes was born and bred in Broadway and was an instrumental part of the village serving as parish council chairman for 24 years. He was also chairman of Broadway Royal British Legion for many years. and the district’s poppy day organiser.
Mr Folkes was elected to Wychavon District Council on in May 1991 and served until May 2011.
He chaired many committees including planning, homelessness appeals and Worcestershire Highways Partnership in Wychavon. But it was after he was flooded in 1998 that Mr Folkes made supporting a flood alleviation scheme for the village a major focus.
Although it did not receive widespread support he persisted and. following the devastating flood of July 2007, when he was among those flooded again, he renewed calls for action.
The campaign was successful when a £4.1million flood alleviation scheme was opened in October 2018.
Mr Folkes’ services to the community were formally recognised in June 2011 when he received an MBE from The Queen.
Cllr Frances Smith, chairman of Wychavon District Council, said: “On behalf of the council I have sent our heartfelt condolences to David’s wife. David was a well-respected member of the council and a dedicated servant to his community. Those who knew him will remember him fondly.”
