A REGATTA organised by Evesham Rowing Club 100 years ago was an opportunity for members to show off their silverware.
"More than usual interest attached to the races this year in consequence of the record performance of the junior crew, and the fact that the many trophies and prizes won at the various regattas were placed on public view in a tent on the Pleasure Grounds," the Journal said.
"Until they saw them the general public could hardly have realised that the crew had won so many victories and that the prizes they had won made such a proud show.
"We reproduce an excellent photograph of the crew with all their prizes. This will give our readers who were unable to attend the races on Wednesday an opportunity of seeing what a grand display they make.
"The exhibition also afforded some of those who have not already contributed towards our Thousand Shillings Fund for the purchase of a challenge vase to commemorate the crew's victories and opportunity of doing so. Of this opportunity we are glad to know a large number availed themselves and on Thursday evening only a few shillings were required to complete the amount we asked for.
"Some capital racing was seen during the afternoon, and it is remarkable that Frank Watkins, who rowed three in the victorious team succeeded in carrying off the triple event by winning the fours, pairs and sculls.
"He has had a remarkably successful season having won eleven prizes with the junior crew, scratch prizes at Evesham and Worcester and the three events on Wednesday. This surely is almost if not quite another record for the club. Certainly no crew turned out by the Evesham club could be complete without Watkins.
"Another fact worthy of note is that all the four-oar events were won on the outside water and in the same boat".
