Evesham Journal Comment
We are sure those who commissioned the Abbey Bridge rebuilding work will be holding a thorough review of what went wrong and why.
The key element of that review should be how expectations about the re-opening date were raised too high and then brought crashing down.
Seems like someone has overpromised and underachieved, and that matters because of the potentially devastating impact on town centre businesses at their most important time of year.
We are very pleased that here at the Evesham Journal we had already put in place an innovative initiative backed by Evesham Market Town Partnership, Worcestershire County Council, Hochtief (the bridge contractor) and Wychavon District Council.
Over four weeks the newspaper is devoting four ‘wraparound’ pages to promoting Evesham as a vibrant shopping and visitor destination.
This special section of the Journal will be packed with information and pictures about what is happening in the town, and how it continues to offer so much despite the inconvenience of the bridge closure.
As part of our continuing Come In We’re Open campaign we have arranged FREE advertising for many small businesses in town.
They, in particular, have been affected by the bridge closure and are desperately worried about the effect that the extended closure period will have on their Christmas trade.
