THE family of the man who opened Evesham nightclub Marilyns have paid tribute to him after he died following a short illness.

Barry Steele was described as a “genuine and humble man” by his daughter after he lost his battle with leukaemia aged 75 last Tuesday.

Mr Steele, who lived with his wife Marie in Harvington, came to the Vale in 1976, moving from Birmingham where he was born in 1938 as one of 14 children.

He became a familiar face selling beer from Bass Brewery to pubs, but was best known in Evesham for opening the town’s first nightclub, now called Marilyns, in the early 80s before going on to invest in a number of commercial properties.

Daughter Suzanne McLaughlin said he often took a chance on people both in business and in his personal life.

“He was a genuine and humble man who has touched many people's lives. He will always be remembered for what he has helped others achieve.

“His entrepreneurial skills ignited the town of Evesham by opening the very first nightclub.

“He continued to pursue his love of Evesham by investing in property in the town.

“His passion never wavered. His loyalty to the town was formidable and he would never have chosen to live anywhere else.

“He was grateful for the success Evesham gave him and his family.”

Mr Steele leaves wife Marie, children Suzanne and Brian and six grandchildren.

A memorial service for Mr Steele will take place at Harvington Parish Church on Saturday at 11am.
