AN Evesham shop trader says he is delighted that after two months of being open his store is still full of happy customers.
Rob Bowers opened the Evesham Greengrocer in Bridge Street with his partner Karen Walden on May 23 and says it is the best decision he ever made.
As many traders struggle with the economic downturn – as well as the added pressure of roadworks on the town’s Abbey Bridge which will soon become a full closure – Mr Bowers said he is positive about the situation.
He said: “In past years I have opened up three shops for a local company and I wanted to go out on my own.
I chose Evesham because there is no fruit and vegetable shops in the town, which is extraordinary considering its growing tradition.
We also sell jams, meats and preserves.
“We have never looked back. It is the best thing I have ever done in my life.
The people are just over the moon with it. It is cheaper than supermarkets and we are sourcing fresh produce, locally when possible.
“The local support has been superb. I am not worried about the bridge. People will come into the town.”
Mr Bowers, who lives near Tewkesbury, added that although he didn’t feel the need to extend his opening hours, they were already suited to people who wanted to miss the rush hour.
“We open from 7am until 5pm,” he said. “I have always been in the trade. My family were growers so I have been in the fruit and vegetable trade all my life.“
