REDUCED parking costs will be introduced when Evesham’s Abbey Bridge is closed for 10 weeks from mid-September.

The scheme, which will apply to short stay car parks only, is one of a number of measures being used by the local authorities to help ensure Evesham is well supported during major work to replace the structure.

During the full closure it will cost 20p for three hours in Oat Street, Chapel Street, The Leys, Merstow Green and Evesham Leisure Centre.

Work continues on the bridge with the new reinforced concrete foundations now almost 90 per cent complete. Three-quarters of the columns are finished as well, contractors Hochtief confirmed.

The update comes as young business owner Ashley Judge, who owns Big Whoop Comics and Computer Services in Vine Court, says the measures to support the town, including redirecting of traffic, can’t come soon enough.

Mr Judge, aged 23, has been struggling to stay afloat amid traffic chaos and wants more help sooner rather than later.

He said: “It was building gradually and I was getting my name out there and it was improving month on month. But overnight after the traffic lights people just stopped coming.

”I think there is a chance it could get better once they put in the two-way system and car park charges.

“They haven’t acted soon enough. My footfall is down about 70 per cent and money is down by that much if not more.

“Without a miracle I can only stay open a couple more months.”

Mr Judge’s sister Kitty, who also works in Vine Mews at the Colour of Magic Tattoo Studio, added: “Because of all of the congestion the footfall has been down completely. Most of my work is walk-ins. I can’t remember the last time I had one.”
